Janek is a semi-serif typeface inspired by old Polish signage. Rather than mimic a specific style, it synthesises various inspirations. It is named after the Author of a classic Polish manual that kickstarted this project, „Techniques of Lettering“ by Jan Wojeński. Large character sets and style selection allow for richness of expression. Pointy, upright, and slightly decorative italics bring a unique blend of aesthetics. It works well in rich text and as a striking display.
Janek consists of seven italic and seven upright styles ranging from Light to Black. With extensive language support and a wide selection of features, it is suited for a range of Latin use cases. Janek is a contemporary throwback to the past.
Janek started as a Masters project at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Since then, it evolved. It ended up being a loose inspiration with the period and Polish outdoor advertising tradition rather than a direct revival. Its influences grew past only Jan Wojeński, however, the name remained. It was redesigned twice before gaining its final shape. Once as a part of an internship at Nova Type Foundry and the second time in 2023, when it was expanded with an Italic style.
