Esja

Esja is a workhorse branding typeface with a strong focus on optical sizes. It’s perfect for tasks requiring consistency in every detail on multiple media and typographic environments. It allows you to stand out with its display weights and to speak clearly in a running text. Pointy counters and curvy stems create forms that shine, especially in Esjas' informal italic weights. Its expressive catchy personality expands to Arabic and Bengali scripts. This typeface was a final master's project at the University of Reading

Research on optical sizes

As part of my course at the University of Reading, I wrote a master's Thesis on "Models of Optical Size Adjustments Across Scripts". This work informed the decision-making when designing the Small and Micro size of Esja. With Size reduction, Esja loses some of the detail, most notably the serif. It also reduces the contrast and increases the character spacing while keeping some key aesthetic differentiators like sharp counters.
