Typa Collage font

Typa Collage font was designed specifically for fabric printing workshops at the Typa Printing Museum, Estonia. To make the museum’s collection more accessible, I created a CNC-cut wood typeface based on existing glyphs found in the museum’s type cases. This wooden type allows participants to physically interact with letterforms that would otherwise be too fragile for beginner print enthusiasts to handle.

The typeface embraces imperfection; with varying heights, irregular baselines, and inconsistent shapes, the design feels informal and playful. It encourages users to abandon perfectionism and focus on the joy of the printing process.

The design process began by documenting various historical glyphs from the collection. These were then traced in Glyphs, translated into 3D models using Fusion 360, and finally CNC-milled. (Special thanks to Jörgen Loots for the CNC cutting.)
